Photogenic Places To Visit

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

This page is as much for my benefit as anyone else’s – a list of photogenic places in to visit (or that I have visited):

The Wey Navigation, from Coxes Lock to Weybridge Town Lock has some very nice scenes – get there in time for sunset, and you can get some wonderful images.

Southwark Cathedral in central London has a mine of great shots within, and you can easily pass a few hours of shooting within. To take photographs you will need to purchase a shooting permit from the shop, but that’s very reasonably priced at only £2. There are also plenty of other great photo opportunities around the cathedral, leading me on to…

Just around the corner from the cathedral is Borough market, which has some of the most photogenic market stalls and produce you’re likely to find on our fair land. Get there early on a Saturday to avoid the crowds.

The market has become a favourite haunt for photographers, and it is not unusual to see hordes of ‘togs wandering the market. The stall-holders are now very used to this, and don’t seem to mind you shooting away.

Painshill ParkPainshill Park in Cobham, Surrey has an impressive array of vistas which open up before you as you walk around the park. Gothic towers, temples, ruins and much more await you:

Not actually in my home area, but whilst on a short holiday in North Yorkshire, I went to a very interesting place called The Forbidden Corner. Essentially, this is a modern folly, with a whole selection of weird and wonderful things to see. If you’re up on that part of the world, I can recommend a visit (but note you need to book in advance). You can find a few shots in this album on my Smugmug site.

DW5_2036_1Portobello Market is a colourful and lively market, popular with tourists (especially since the film, “Notting Hill”), running most of the length of Portobello Road in Notting Hill, London. I visited it as part of the Worldwide Photowalk, 2009, for a few hours of shooting, and was very happy with the variety of subjects. If you are more interested in food photography, then I would recommend Borough Market (see above), but for a wider range of interesting bits and pieces, Portobello Market had plenty to offer in its own right.
