Wasing Park Strobist Shoot

BarbaraLast weekend, I had a great day’s shoot at Wasing Park at Aldermaston in West Berkshire. I normally go into these shoots with a specific idea in mind for my main shot of the day, but this time I had no prior plans. So, a recce of the site highlighted a few interesting spots which could work as locations, and off I went.
The shots in the churchyard with Barbara (that’s her above) were probably the most interesting of the day.  There was a natural “frame” of trees and shrubs at this spot, and even a convenient indentation to use as a seat. Key elements of the setup were to drop the ambient down a sniff, to avoid the background through the trees blowing out. A key light from the front (shoot-through umbrella) gave the usual lift to the main elements of the image.  However, the tricks here were the hard light to the rear, which depending on the shot, doubled as either a hair light, or hard rim light against the face. Worked nicely either way.  To finish off, added an extra light on the cross in the background, as it was practically in silhouette, so throwing some light onto it stopped it drawing the eye quite as much, but also made it more interesting to look at when your eyes eventually got to it.

A full gallery of the shots can be seen on my SmugMug site here, where you can also watch a HD video slideshow of the shots.

Many of the shots are also on my Flickr site, and the video slideshow also appears on YouTube (visit the site to see the large, HQ version):
